How Long Before Lungs Repair From Smoking?

Over 430,000 people die every year as a result of a smoking related disease. Cigarette smoking is accountable for 87% of lung cancer deaths and is known to be the leading cause of cancer in the bladder, oral cavity and pharynx, esophagus and larynx. Once your body has developed cancer or another smoking related disease it is too late to take it back, but the good news is that the lungs heal very quickly if you quit smoking before major damage is done.

Only twenty minutes after quitting there is a medical difference in the body. Blood pressure drops back down to a more healthy level.

Within the first day of quitting blood circulation will improve and the lungs will begin to increase in function.

In one to nine months after quitting shortness of breath and coughing will decrease. The lungs will be working much better and have a better handle on mucus, they will have an easier time cleaning the lungs and this reduces the risk of infections.

After five years of being a non-smoker the risk of stroke is that of someone who never smoked a day in their life.

Once fifteen years have passed nearly all of the health risks will return to normal.

This is very good news for smokers who are thinking of quitting. It does not take long before lungs repair from smoking and in addition to all of these long term health benefits, someone who quits will very quickly have better breath, their clothes will smell better, food will taste better and their sense of smell will come back.

Pulmonary Hypertension Prognosis – What to Do

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition where the blood pressure in the lungs increases. This disease affects the lungs and be quite dangerous. When the blood pressure in the arteries or veins of the lungs is increased the person experiencing it can suffer a lot of damage. Pulmonary hypertension can be divided into primary pulmonary hypertension and secondary pulmonary hypertension. Primary pulmonary hypertension usually has an unknown cause but is attributed sometimes to genetic factors, an auto immune disease or the use of certain substances. The abuse of several drugs has been linked with the development of this condition. This type of hypertension is very dangerous and mostly affects women younger than 40 years.

Secondary pulmonary hypertension is the type of hypertension that has a known cause such as bronchitis, emphysema and pulmonary embolism. The condition will cause an increased blood flow in the pulmonary artery. This can constrict the blood vessels that lead to the heart which can produce a heart attack. Some symptoms related to this condition are fatigue, chest pain and cough. Another symptom that a person might experience is inflammation of the legs.

The prognosis for pulmonary hypertension is usually poor. This life threatening disease has no known cure yet but there are several treatments available to extend the life expectancy of the patients. One of the treatments is the lung and heart transplant. This is necessary as transplanting the lung alone is not enough to compensate for the damage. The use of anticoagulants is very helpful too for the victims of pulmonary high blood pressure. Anticoagulants prevent the formation of blood clots, helping to ease the strain on the cardiovascular system. Other medications commonly use to treat this disease is the calcium channel blockers and vasodilators. Calcium channel blockers assist in opening the vascular smooth muscles in the lungs. The vasodilators trigger a reaction in the cells to expand the blood vessels and in consequence lower the blood pressure.

Some exercise can also be done in order to improve the life of the patient. Exercising should only be done in a moderate amount and with the approval of the doctor. The early detection of the disease is critical in order ensure a greater life expectancy for the victim. Treatment for the condition can help in adding a couple of years to the life of the patient. Living a healthy life style, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and exercise regularly can help in preventing difficult diseases.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common conditions that are inherited. The glands that produce secretions and body fluids get affected with this condition and the secretions become thicker and stickier than what they should be normally. Because of this the functions of the digestive system and the lungs get hampered. Cystic fibrosis is brought on by an inherited gene which is faulty and is found on the chromosome 7. This gene controls the water and salt movement in the cells in the body. For a child to develop this problem the gene has to be inherited by it from both the parents and it is an autosomal recessive form of inheritance.

The symptoms of this disease are infertility, liver failure, diabetes, motions which are large and foul smelling and frequent chest infections which are severe. Though mortality is high, the average life of a child affected with this is around forty years of age.

Research is being conducted on the faulty gene and work is being done to find ways of either replacing or repairing this gene with gene therapy. However, there is no cure for this problem as yet and neither is there any way in which it can be prevented. Babies are being screened for it as soon as they are born and even antenatal tests are available for this dreaded problem.
Treatment should be given to those affected with this problem immediately so as to prevent too much damage being done to the system. This can help people to achieve fairly comfortable lives and live with this disease. Once the infection is controlled and there is no chance of further complications setting in, long term harm can be avoided.

A proper diet and healthy life style is very essential in promoting good health amongst those who are suffering with cystic fibrosis. Foods which should be consumed are the high energy ones, and additional mineral and vitamin supplements should be added to the diet. Alongside a good diet the person requires exercise to maintain their health and fitness. Another important part of treatment and therapy is breathing exercise and physiotherapy so that the build up of excess mucus is prevented in the lungs.

In case of inflammations and infections in the lungs, antibiotics and other forms of medications are given to the patient to control the infection. A lung transplant becomes necessary if there is respiratory failure.
